debug/repair riotboard powerup

farsi
farsi over 8 years ago

Hello,

I haven't been using the riotboard for a while, and now it does not power up anymore (the green LEDs are on, but there is no boot signal on the screen).

Is it possible to repair the board, e.g. exchanging the power management IC ?

Otherwise, where can I send the board to to have it repaired?

Thanks a lot!

If you are using one of the Linux images, then it is possible that there is nothing wrong with your RIoTboard.  Some users (including me) have a problem using the HDMI output with the provided Linux images, particularly when an HDMI-to-DVI cable is used to connect to a DVI-D display.  The problem is evident if you use a serial cable connected to the J18 connector to view console output during boot time as noted by this user:

    https://www.element14.com/community/thread/37656/l/linux-freezes-when-connected-to-hdmi#174912

Note that the boot process halts after the "Starting kernel ..." message appears.

So you might want to get a serial cable and see what the console output is telling you before making any arrangements for repair, particularly if you have changed anything in your equipment setup since you last used the RIoTboard successfully.  I posted some links on serial cable use in this thread a while back:

Also, I would imagine that the cost of repair would equal or exceed buying a new (or used) board, if you are obliged to ship any sub-$100.00US single-board computer (not just RIoTboard) internationally.  Although there are not many RIoTboard sources anymore, there are still a few left:
