wired network seems dead....

phoenixcomm

Hi I to was a recipient of the RIoTboard. Put in the following:

  • Mouse
  • HDMI cable to my TV
  • working Ethernet cable
  • and power

after a few minutes it boots to the locked screen. Pick the lock (slide) and start looking around... went to the browser and it said "CAN'T CONNECT".. ok looked around for the settings, found them.. and then could not find how to set up my network.....

Any body want to way in on this one....

I assume you don´t have an UART serial connector?

Without that it´s a bit hard to find out what the problem is.

You don´t have settings inside Android for the ethernet connection yet.

Only way to get info about the network status right now is through a terminal.

Either with a UART connector or within Android with a terminal emulator.

If you have a terminal emulator as an app inside Android or an UART connection you can type:

    busybox ifconfig

This gets some info on your connection.

If you don´t have one you´ll need to install an terminal app. Easiest way without GooglePlay (you need the UART connection to install GooglePlay) would be through adb.

In this Blog post where I describe how to root Android is a zip file with an terminal app inside.

    Rooting Android for the RIoTBoard

You need to setup the adb connection as described there.

Then you can install the terminal app from the Windows Command shell:

    adb install terminal.apk

You then have the terminal app inside Android and can type the busybox command as above.

There was someone else who had problems getting a network connection in Android, not sure he ever got to the bottom of it.  So if you can work out why it's not working it would probably be useful to document it and what you need to do to fix it.

The obvious way I found to tell that it has working network is that the clock on the lock screen will have the correct date/time before you even get chance to look any further.

You really need a serial console then. It'll help enormously in any effort to debug things.

Is your laptop on this network and does it get an IP from your router automatically ?

If it does then  try it on the wired network if it's not already connected preferably with the same cable you are using for the riot board

If that works then see if all the link lights come on when you plug in the RIOT board. If not it may be a board problem ..

If it does then check the router and see if it is receiving DHCP requests from your riot board. The MAC address of the RIOT board's NIC will be a give away ..Just somethings to try good luck

can you try linux on same board and let us know ethernet status.

this is just to check if the hardware is fine or not.

    I don't have a proxy and 192.168.1.0 -199 are fixed and 200 - 255 are dhcp from my router.

Just one problem, there's no mac address set on the board and hence no label.  What happens on linux is that you get a random mac assigned on every boot.  There's some evidence that android is doing something different with the mac, but not clear what.
