Inserting USB Thumb Drive Causes The Riotboard to reboot

Hi,

 

Has anyone seen an issue when inserting a USB Thumb into the Riotboard USB Port?  I'm finding that the Riotboard will reset / reboot as soon as the USB Thumb Drive touches the outside of the USB Port shield.  I have been able to reproduce this issue many times, and with different USB Thumb Drives.  All you need to do is wait until the Riotboard has finished booting, and setting at the desktop.  Then take a USB Thumb Drive and insert it in the Riotboard USB port or touch the outside of the Riotboard USB Port ( you may have to touch the thumb to the outside of the USB port a few times before) it will reboot, and it seems to always reboots.  The longer the Riotboard is powered up, the sooner it will reboot when the USB Thumb drive is touched to the USB port or inserted into the USB port.

 

OS: Android 4.3

 

Any recommendation for resolving this failure would be helpful.

    This can happen if the power supply you are using is too weak.
    When putting a USB device in you get a peak in the current drawn from the board.
    Which can lead to a voltage drop if the power supply can´t handle it, forcing the board to reset.

     

    If the tips from Dave R didn´t help try a stronger power supply.

    Hi Otto,

     

    Thanks for the response to my question.  We never had to actually plug in a USB device to get the Riotboard to reset.  All we had to was touch the USB Housing with something metallic like a pen, or the end of an unconnected used be cable to generate the reset. 

     

    Our power supply was 5V/4A.

     

    We ended up grounding the Riotboard  by moving it to the embedded housing that we use for our embedded products and making sure it was grounded to the chassis.  So far, this has appeared to help.  I want call it fix yet.
