Of course it is necessary to use a VECTOR ('stroked') font for EXACT
compatibility between platforms and support of Gerber. The 'Simplex'
font I mean IS a vector font, uses the same stroke definitions as
EAGLE's current vector font (they come from the same source and
designer), is compatible with absolutely everything (including Gerber),
but just LOOKS a bit better (and, because the number of strokes is
larger than that of the current font, would increase the resulting
Gerber file size).
The CadSoft guys wouldn't even have to change their drawing algorithms,
but 'just' add accented characters to it, include it in EAGLE and make
it selectable for the user.
I strongly second this. (And I have suggested to implement that font,
too - a long time ago.)
I just disagree at one small detail: the Simplex font does not look a
/bit/ better, it looks /much/ better.
A small increase in Gerber file sizes doesn't matter - today, gerber
file sizes normally are induced by the polygons used, and normally
there's not really much text on the boards, anyway.
