Newbee here. I have significant experience in Pads, Expedition and
Altium, but first time for eagle and this is probably holding me back
here. I am trying to create new parts in a new library by copying from
existing libraries. I was successful in transfering the package but I
cannot figure out how to get the schematic symbol over to the new part.
Why should I have to redraw the resistor symbol? I am trying to create my
own libraries which will have additional attributes such as a part
number, ordering info and cost. Hopefully I can later cause these
attributes to appear in a bill of materials at the end of a design. Any
help?
Hi Gene,
For some reason that I've never been given, EAGLE's library editor treats
symbols slightly different than packages or devices. They don't show up in
Control Panel and you have less options to copy them.
The only way to copy a symbol is to open the source symbol, turn on all
layers, select group command and then select all elements by dragging
rectangle or multi-point polygon selection, then select "cut" command, then
apply that cut command to the previously group selected (with right-mouse
click menu), then open destination library, create a new symbol or edit an
existing symbol, select paste, and finally left-click to place what was
copied.
With EAGLE V5 and before that all had to be done in the same EAGLE
instance. I believe EAGLE V6 now uses the system clipboard so it is
possible to do this between different EAGLE instances though I haven't
tried it myself yet.
For devices and packages it is much easier, open the destination library,
go to control panel and expand the library "explorer-like" section, browse
through to the library in question, expand it and then right-click on the
package or device in question and select "copy to library". That will
automatically copy that to the currently opened library. In order for this
to work the library has to be in a folder that is included in the Library
Directory as set in Control Panel -> Options -> Directories.
