Importing a background image in Board Editor to semplify drawing

Some time ago I used, at professional level, Autocad

 

there I can import an image as backgound, this give the ability to copy the image and to reproduce it in electronic format

 

in that case I imported city maps as to draw the corresponding dxf map that will be used to insert the electrical distribution lines (an add on was also able to control the consistency of the electric line drawed)

 

I would like to import in Eagle images (of PCB) to redraw it in a quick time to have full mod ability on it

 

often I find some image about a circuit that with little mod will be good for my use, but I must start to redrow the whole image to be able to modify only a little part of it

 

There is a function or an add on tool for this import of bachground ?

 

I've read to use the "import-bmp.ulp" but I'm a beginner and not able at all to find this function in Eagle 5.11

  • I've find some explanation about the import-bmp.ulp and tried it

     

    Isn't so simple to use and what happen is that the image is transformed in a vectorized picture

     

    NOT very practical to be used !

     

    It will be Very Nice if there was in Eagle one function to simply insert the image as backgound of the window whith the important function to scale it to the dimensions for the board that we set in Eagle

     

    To me this will be a very useful function

     

    if Autodesk added this ability to Autocad, there will be a good reason about, don't you think so ?

     

    I remember well that there was the possibility to vectorize an image also in Autocad, but no one in my staff used it as it wasn't very reliable, all we preferred the other method also if we must redraw the image instead to have it vectorized by the program

    I agree that the ability to scale an image after it is inserted would be

    nice. It would also be nice if it did not import into so many objects.

    This can take some time in the CAM processor.

    Also the import of those Eagle consider different objects, gives easily a message about numbering capability reached and stops the import

     

    I tried with a 16 color BMP (a PCB with components layout) the image was wite - black - and something you see as gray (in realty a mix of different colors) and to be able to import it in Eagle (after a long try and error that gived only a poor result) and to obtain that poor result instead of nothing I was forced to select only the wite color or the import will stop after a few flashing an error
