Quick Footprint Creation - What is your Method?

Hi All,

 

I was doing some comparisons between CAD SW for a larger project I was starting. I've used eagle for years, and I kept coming across people complaining about how long it takes to make footprints. I never ran into this - I wondered what method people use for making them?

 

I always just use the 'grid' command to change the grid, and just copy/move elements as needed. You can go direct from 'suggested footprints' to a PCB footprint most times. Sometimes you need to do a little math to get the offset from some specific element, but it's still far from a show-stopper. It's not the most efficient method ever, but it's pretty damn fast. That footprint I made in the video was just tested in hardware, and it was a perfect fit...

    I saw your post and looked at your video. Both are correct in describing building footprints. The problem for me was that it took quite a while to figure out that so many steps were needed to build footprints and when a person is at a company they usually want you to start producing rather quickly. A lot of other CAD programs make footprint constrcution much easier (Pulsonix), not to say Eagle isn't fast "once" you get the method down.

     

    One problem I have is that when someone needs assistance the response 75% of the time is "read the manual". I say to those people, why even reply if that's all you can say. If you know the answer, give it. If you are so put off by beginners don't reply.

     

    Thanks Colin, I learned from your video and hope I can ask you questions when I am stuck on an Eagle problem.
