A Symbol without a Package?

mamikee
mamikee over 17 years ago

I wish to annotate a schematic by adding the parts that connect (via

connectors on the PCB) but don't which to have packages show up to be placed

on the circuit board.

Can anyone illuminate the proper way to do this?

Thanks in advance,

Mike Berry, Colorado

I assume there is no provision for doing this in the current release.

I will add this as a feature request.

For now I've done the annotation by adding text to the schematic symbol

    layer.

there is no problem making a symbol with out a package.

see for example the eagle frames library

Ah, that is a perfect example!

So my next question is if you have an existing device is it easy to remove

the package?  Could not find a way to do that.

    Thanks!

If you have pins in the symbols, you need a package for it. If you use only

other drawing primitives,  you can get by without a package.

    1. Avoid top posting. While OK for personal mail it doesn't work in newsgroups

    2. To remove a package from a device simple right click on the package name

    and select delete.

    cheers

I'd define a new device variant that uses the connector's package. So on the

schematic it shows up as your device, but on the board it shows up as the

    footprint of the connector.

You might even make the symbol be something that indicates that it is a

connector and the device that connects via the connector. See the attached

offboard_led.bmp for a quick example of what I mean. Make a device with that

symbol and the package from the 2 pin connector, et voila!
