Supply layers Ground planes and polygons

Greetings,

   I am trying to get some insight about supply layers, ground planes

and polygons.

   I have a problem that fill polygons leave a clearance away from a

trace of the same signal.  They only seem to connect at pads with

thermals.  Is that proper? Maybe I do not understand the concept.

   When I set a supply layer (eg. GND) the autorouter does not want to

route.  The manual says to use polygons instead but I still have the

problem above.

   Any insight about how supply layers should be used to get a "quiet"

ground plane with minimal currents?

    Either use supply layers or polygons but not both on a layer.  From help

    layer "Supply layers are viewed "inverted"".

    If all you want it a single signal layer of copper and not any traces

    use a supply layer. But it is better and more flexible to remove the $

    from the layer name to make it a regular layer and then add named

    polygons as required. Traces can be also routed on this layer without a

    problem.
