I'm sure the right-click popup menu in v5 is good for those starting
with the software, however I'm used to not having that thing pop up,
is there a way to turn it off?

This might help:
From the manual concerning eaglerc file:
Group Selection
Since the context menu function on the right mouse button interferes
with the selection of groups, a group is now selected with Ctrl
plus right mouse button. If you want to have the old method of
selecting groups back, you can add the line
Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu = "1"
to the file. This will allow selecting groups with the right mouse
button only and require Ctrl plus right mouse button for context
menus.
