I would like to put a dotted box around some optional components on my
schematic but don't seem to fins a way of doing it. Is there a way to add a
rectangle that is not a part of the net list? (Eagle 5.1 Windows).
Thanks,
Sid.

Thanks,

You could Change Layer to 95 (values) and Change Style to Short Dash.
Then place "wires" on this layer. It will have no effect on netlists.

That worked perfectly ... thank you,
