Web Access to CadSoft Support Forums

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 17 years ago

Hello everyone,

We are happy to announce that we are now providing web browser access to CadSoft's support forums.  We are now mirroring these forums at http://www.eaglecentral.ca.

Anything you post to these groups will be forwarded to CadSoft's news servers.  Any new messages on the news servers will be updated every few minutes.

Every message ever posted to these newsgroups is available.  And now it is possible to quickly search across forums for the answers you are looking for.

We take spam very seriously as does CadSoft.  By default, non-registered or registered users can't post or reply to messages.  In order to be able to create and reply to posts, you must email mailto:perms@eaglecentral.ca and request the ability to post.  Please include your login ID and/or email account.  It's unfortunate that this is necessary, but we intend to honor the very high SNR of posts on the CadSoft news servers.

NOTE:  If you have posted to any of CadSoft's forums in the past or registered with the EET forums, then an account has automatically been created for you.  However, everyone must reset their password to gain access:  The process is:

1)  Click on login link.

2)  Click on the "Forgot Password" link

3)  Enter your email.

4)  Click on the link you receive in the email.  This will send a second email with the new password.

5)  Use the password from the second email to login.

Enjoy,

James.

Can you please immediately change it so it is not browsable until you

log in to it.  Or close it.

As is, it is open for email harvesting by spammers!!

I have taken care to make sure that email addresses aren't available if you aren't logged in.  If there is a place I missed please do let me know.  Without logging in you can see the name of the person/account who posted, but the email address should not be accessible.

    Cheers,

    James.

    Further to my initial response...

I am concerned about this and just in case I missed something, I logged out and viewed the source of a few pages.  The only email address there is my own.

If you do see an instance where this isn't the case, please do let me know.

    Cheers,

    James.

Ah, well it is half OK

You can not see the users registered email

BUT as the messages are browsable without logging in, any email that any

user have put in a sig, or if they are for some reason sharing adress

for direct communication (bug hunting etc).

Maybe I am a bit sensitive.

    What do other people think?

All this information is available anyway. Note that the complete

postings, including the headers (and of course the bodies too), are

already available here by nntp - ready for being harvested.

any mail address in the body is even converted to a mailto: link!

Since many people start replies with "name, mail address wrote", you

find many mail links on eaglecentral.ca.

Obfuscating mail addresses might be a good idea.

Although I agree with Tilmann that all adresses can also be harvested

easily from the cadsoft news server, I think that it is not widely

used by spammers. And I see that we have a lot of posters using

valuable adresses and likely not aware of the spam problem.

Many ecad users have little usenet practice, so you should protect

    them as far as possible.

    Oliver
