Noob Frustrated - Can't find a part !

Former Member

Hi. I was hoping someone can help a new eagle user.

I am trying to create my first schematic and can't find a part I need. It's in an SOT-89 package (MC78L05ACHX). I searched and found a couple Fairchild libraries but they don't have that part in an SOT-89.

I will resort to making a part but it seems like a common part so I'm surprised I can find it. Matter of fact I can't find anything in SOT-89. What am I doing wrong ?

Any hints on how to search for parts ?

Have you added more libraries to EAGLE? The default libraries that come with the program are far from complete. I would recommend downloading the Newark part libraries, they have tons of extra parts and many many footprints.

Often you can just use a similar part or a different part with the same footprint, that way your board layout will be identical. Or you can find a part with the same footprint and just edit it to match the pinout of your part.

If you need more help I'm online for a while now!

    Hi Alexander,

Yes I downloaded an Element 14 library that has the part but is a different package. I tried using the search function in eagle to find another SOT-89 and it comes back with nothing.

I've designed in ExpressPCB many times and they had Common packages SOT-89, 223, etc.. but since I'm new to the software I don't know how to find a basic 3 pin linear regulator.

I will search on Newark now..

Bob -- check out the Adafruit parts library over on adafruit.com. Their EAGLE parts library is excellent -- and I'm sure it'll have a SOT-89.

If not, I'll find a library that does so you don't have to create a new one.

    Bob --

I found a part in SOT-89 that you can add to your library and use in your design. I can email it to you if you want.

    EDIT: find it attached.

Thank you so much. I found the part from the library you posted.

Is there any way to search for the package type in the ADD component screen?

Yes, I just type the package name into the search box at the bottom (not the attributes one) and usually it displays every part in that package. Try typing SOIC8 or SOT-23 for example.

If you wish to search for a package then you should do it from the ADD

in the board editor as that will search package names.  Once you have

identified the which libraries contain the package, abort the Add.

You can also do it from the control panel but it is strange and slow on

    the large Eagle library.

Right click on a Libraries folder and select Search in Folder, entering

you r search text at the bottom. It search one find at a time as you

    click next.

Thank you guys for you help.  I think I have all my components accounted for but it did take a lot of time to find them. Maybe this is just a one time thing and from here on out Eagle will save me time as I get used to it. Anyway thanks again.

I'd be curious to know if you can find parts like this on http://schematicpal.com.  I made it just for these situations.

I found the part you're looking for with this query:  UA78M05*  Let me know if it works for you, or if you have any suggestions.
