Books about EAGLE?

AnalogNotes
AnalogNotes over 11 years ago

Amazon shows that there are four books (in English) about EAGLE.  One dates from 2003, one from last year (2013), one from earlier this month (April 2014), and one yet to be released (May 2014).

From the reviews and promo material, it seems that all four of these books are oriented towards the new user.  Only one of them (Designing Circuit Boards with EAGLE by Matt Scarpino, April 2014) seems to even acknowledge scripting and user language programs.

Does anyone have experience with any of these books?

For completeness, was this one on your list?

    http://www.elektor.com/eagle-v6-getting-started-guide

The Table of Contents does not reveal a section on ULP though.

The site does have a couple of downloads including a tutorial for novices.

Yes, the Elektor book is the one from last year, 2013.  It's the most expensive of the four (almost double the price) and there are only three Amazon reviews, average 3 stars.  I took a look at the link you gave and there is a 38 page preview.  I found it a bit annoying that there were so many little mouse icons in the text.  For whatever reason, I'd rather read "left click" rather than see a picture in the middle of a sentence.  (FWIW, I'm not a fan of the dots in the Cadsoft manual either...)

Sorry, should have listed the books before:

    2003 - $20.75 - 3.2 of 5 stars

Build Your Own Printed Circuit Board: Al Williams: 9780071427838: Amazon.com: Books

    2013 - $39.99 - 3.0 of 5 stars

Eagle V6: Getting Started Guide [PCB Design]: Mitchell Duncan: 9781907920202: Amazon.com: Books

    2014 - $24.91 - 5.0 of 5 stars

Designing Circuit Boards with EAGLE: Make High-Quality PCBs at Low Cost: Matthew Scarpino: 9780133819991: Amazon.com: Bo…

    2014 (not released yet) - $21.78

Make Your Own PCBs with EAGLE: From Schematic Designs to Finished Boards: Simon Monk: 9780071819251: Amazon.com: Books

I went ahead and ordered a used copy of the Al Williams book and a new copy of the Matt Scarpino book...

P.S. I searched and found that Matt Scarpino has posted here once.  Apparently he didn't get the dot thing either:

I love those "free" trials.  Ten days, then they start charging $43/month.

Actually not too bad a deal for what you get if you're an avid reader.  I'm

more of a dead tree kind of guy though, so I'd rather spend the money on

    printed books...

Through the miracles of Amazon Prime, I came home to find a box on the

porch.  I have the Scarpino book in my hands right now!  At first glance,

it seems to be a wide-ranging book, but with not a lot of depth to any

particular subject.  (I'll update this after I've gone through the book a

    bit more.)

Matt does seem to build on ideas.  After an introduction and an overview,

in chapter 3 he uses an inverting op-amp circuit and goes start to finish

with schematic capture, board layout and gerber generation.  Then, in

chapters 4 through 7, he looks more closely at the schematic, layout,

routing and output files, respectively.  Chapter 8 is on libraries, and

chapter 9 is about using LTspice.

I like how he discusses editor commands in chapter 10, before starting to

discuss user language programs in chapter 11, the one you linked to on the

Safari site.  However, while he discusses individual commands, I haven't

found anywhere (yet...?) that he discusses grouping commands to create

scripts.  He mentions the assign command and gives an example of assigning

a script to a keystroke, and there is a brief mention of the menu command

at the end of chapter 13, after about 20 pages of how to create ULP

dialogs, but not a lot about actual scripting.  Chapter 12 has details

about user language data structures with a lot of short code snippets and

what looks like five ULPs (none longer than a page).

Seems like a lot of good foundational stuff, but I think there's still a

lot of room for a more advanced book.  This one was definitely worth the

$24 I spent on it though.

I have Simon Monk's book (got it a couple of weeks ago from Amazon) and so

far, I like it.  He covers a lot of the "not so intuitively obvious" stuff

for beginners and walks you through a number of different designs and

discusses how and why to do stuff.  Couple of minor errors in it (meant

right when he says left etc.) but I like it so far (read about 80% of it).
