want to make cable and harness drawings

Is there a simple way to make cable and harnessing diagrams with Eagle? I

was planning to only make a schematic and only made a symbol. Seems that the

symbol can not be added to schematic unless it has a package included.

Is there any way to have a simple schematic with mechanical layout included

in the same drawing?

Thank you for any pointers to get me going - Oppie

    Hello Oppie,

I've run into this myself.  In EAGLE, you must add a device to the

schematic.  A _device is the combination of the symbol, the package

(footprint), and the connections between the two (plus some other settings

    and attributes).

The fallout is that you must have a physical model of a device to simply

add it to the scheamtic.  Most other CAD tools I've used don't have this

restriction--at least not to this extent.  Often you have to have the

symbol pin to footprint pad mapping, but the physical model of the

footprint and pads is not required.

In any case, a way around this is to simply have a bunch of dummy packages

with the correct number of pads.  In fact, you could just have one package

with more pads then you'll need and use it for everything.  You'll have to

crate the device in EAGLE but since you don't care about the actual

physical implementation you can just connect without any thought which is

    very fast.

This means the pad numbers won't be right, so you might want to set the

"visible" flag on your pins in the symbol to either "none" or "pin".  Then

you won't see the arbitrary, incorrect pad connections.

    I hope that helped.

    Cheers,

    James.

    Hello,

It seems possible to create a device with only a symbol as long as the

symbol has no pins. see 'frames.lib'. I did a little test (V4.09) and

    this works fine.

And seeing you don't have a package, maybe you could do without the pins

    and use wire to connect?

    Richard
