Renaming parts with U$ designator

We recently had an outside engineer do a schematic for us.  He used default

Eagle parts for many of the devices in the schematic.  Now, I'm faced with a

SCH that has almost every part designator named "U$", for resistors,

capacitors, chips, etc.

 

Is there a way to rename ranges of these U$ designators to something more

meaningful?

    AFAICT there is only the method by hand, part by part. You could

    probably write a little ULP that allows to do a one click U->R, then

    U->C and so on but unless it's hundreds of parts that might take even

    more time to write.
