Tip: fast search in libraries

Joop14
Joop14 over 11 years ago

When I'm looking for a footprint (or something else) in the libraries, I found that it is much faster to open a console (terminal) in the library directory and enter the following command:

grep -i so8 *.lbr

This will show which libraries contain the string so8 or SO8.

Ofcourse,  this only works from Eagle version 6.xx and up which stores the libraries in XML.

In the unfortunate case that you have been forced to use the windows OS, grep is not installed by default.

In that case you can download it here: Grep for Windows

Have a nice day,

Joop

    Hi Guys,

You can also search for packages in the board editor's ADD command,

avoiding the need for a third party tool. Most of the common packages

are in the ref-packages.lbr so it's always a good place to start.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    1. Many times, when I'm creating new devices, I don't have a schematic or board opened so I can not use the ADD command.

    2. On Linux, grep is installed by default.

    3. In my case, when using the ADD command for searching, it does not find the libraries provided by Cadsoft Eagle because I removed the eagle/lbr directory from the path's in the settings. Instead I created and added a directory eagle/lbr2 where I put the libraries I use. This way, Eagle loads a project much faster.

(When alI libraries are included in the project file (*.epf), Eagle becomes slow when opening a project.

When you want to try this, make sure you remove the library path's from the project file (you have to edit it manually).

    Best Regards,

    Joop
