Package variant - cannot add

I am trying to add a package variant to a device that is already used in

the design.  When I select "New" and pick the package I get a message

"Variant already defined."  Danged if I can figure out what I am doing

wrong.

    Have you typed something in the "variant name" box? If you don't do that

    Eagle will try to assign it the blank default, which is probably already

    there as another package.
