New to Eagle - Too Many Component Choices

Hi,

I'm trying to get back into the electronics hobby after a 30 year hiatus. I was hoping to use Eagle to start simple and move up from there. Here is an example of my problem; I want to select a standard 5mm LED and I get 100's if not 1000's of choices. I search for 74xx00 chip and I get dozens of chips when all I want is a thru-hole DIP. I'm nowhere near exploring surface mount technology. Is there any way to filter surface mount compents and provide me just the simpler choices?

Regards,

Scott

    Hi,

there. Here is an example of my problem; I want to select a standard 5mm

LED and I get 100's if not 1000's of choices. I search for 74xx00 chip

and I get dozens of chips when all I want is a thru-hole DIP. I'm

    Hello Scott,

In the search window (ADD from schematic) there is a box in the lowerhand

corner you can 'untick' to not search for smd parts. But I get the

impression that you go about it the wrong way. You don't search for a

74xx00, you search for a 7400 or a 7474, so exact part numbers. Eagle will

add that part to the schematic and place the corresponding footprint on

the board. If I search for 7400 I get 3 choices: A DIN, EU or US schematic

symbol and if I turn the SMD search off, each with only a DIP14 footprint.

In the 'doc' directory of your Eagle installation is the manual and a

tutorial. It will take some time to get to know Eagle but it is usually

better to invest that time than to continue 'battling' with it. It isn't

    hard.

Good luck with your rediscovered hobby!

    Richard
