PCB layout in a NON normal shape in Eagle

Hi all,

just 2 questions:

1. How is it possible to modify the layout perimeter or the borders of a PCB? I have to make a PCB with a strange shape, absolutely not rectangular.

2. In a manufacturer's data sheet, there is a suggestion of how to make the layout of the PCB. I could import it as a jpg file, as the attached one. May I, in your opinion, use it to speed up the layout in Eagle or not? And, if yes, how?

Thank you very much in advance if somebody could help.

Draw it. Use the "wire" tool and select layer 20 - Dimension. Then draw

the shape you want. You can also edit the default perimeter with a

combination of "move" and "split" operations, but it's often easier to

    start from scratch.

Something I've also done occasionally is to define a library part for a

housing, if I know I'm using an off-the-shelf enclosure. I put a box

icon as the schematic symbol, and the package consists of the

recommended PCB shape and size drawn in layer 20. Then whenever I'm

designing something to go in that type of box I add that component to

the project and get my PCB outline and documentation of the housing,

which also means it's included in the BoM.

I suppose you could turn it into a BMP, use the import-bmp.ulp to put it

down as background, then place the components and route the tracks using

that background as template. The ULP imports into non-standard layers,

so they won't propagate to the Gerber files and are easily excluded from

    printouts.

    HTH,

    Rob
