Watch battery library in EAGLE?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Is there a library that contains 1.5V watch batteries in it?  I have been searching far and wide, and can't seem to find one.

If one does not exist, I would be willing to create one for the community at large.

Do you mean the type that come with welded contacts on them? If so, they are in the battery library, e.g. search for CR2032 for one example. But the CR2032 is a 3V battery, not 1.5V.

The CR2032 is the rather large disc one that is more often in things like weighing scales with an LCD display, rather than watches really.

For some smaller batteries, Farnell has some clips that come in two parts, a small round disc that is soldered in the center of the PCB, and a three-sided retainer shell that is soldered on top, so that the battery can slide in.

The photo here shows what I mean (the center disc is not in this photo). You can see the outline of where it was supposed to be soldered

in (the clip is a Farnell part). This was with EAGLE but I've lost my library since then (it was a custom user library).

This was for something like a 12mm dia coin cell, i.e. watch sized.

    shabaz,

Thanks for your help.  My question is not about selecting individual components, but whether libraries that contain these components exist for EAGLE.

I am looking for libraries containing both the PCB-mountable battery clip and the battery itself.  The CR2032 is far too large for my application, and an SR66 or SR44 watch battery will hold charge more reliably for a long time compared to Li-ion.

    Hi Ken,

I don't think there is any library with this (I did search in the Eagle libraries, also LR66 and LR44 as they seem to be referred to on google - there could be a difference, but I didn't check). By the way, regarding your last sentence, I think the SR/LR batteries are not rechargeable, but the Li-Ion is, so they are different. The LR/SR are intended for lasting a long time as a primary cell, as long as current draw is very low. The CR2032 is not Li-Ion either, but is a Lithium primary cell. There is also the BR range, which depending on use-case could be a better replacement for the CR range.

Anyway, to answer your question, no I don't believe there is an existing library with these batteries or associated clips.

BTW do you have a link to a distributor/manufacturer of those little

    battery clips?

    Hi Joern,

Keystone have a good collection. The SMT low profile ones look nice and there are through-hole variants too. (Not sure which specific one the OP wanted).

    shabaz,

OK, if a library does not exist yet, I have no problem creating one.  However, I have never created my own EAGLE libraries before.  Is it OK to create a library based on a manufacturer's design?  I know that watch batteries have standard sizes they must adhere to, no matter the manufacturer.  But would I need written permission from a manufacturer before I can create these libraries?  I don't want to violate any IP protection laws.

    Hi Ken,

I've not heard of any legal restriction like this in any jurisdiction. Actually no matter how good CAD libraries are,

there will always be parts that are not contained in any existing library, so virtually every design needs some new library components

to be created (i.e. basically  design and select components that perfectly suit the application, and then deal with creating the part

if it doesn't exist in a CAD library).

A CAD system that allows you to rapidly create new library parts is thus useful; the EAGLE workflow is pretty quick in this respect.

There is an EAGLE manual that has a section on component creation, I found the guide very good to follow.
