multiple instances of Eagle open at the same time OSX

SouthernAtHeart

I'm running OSX Maverick, with the latest Eagle software.  Sometime I want to copy, view, compare, etc, 2 of my schematics.  But when I open the second, it always closes the first.  Is there a way to have 2 instances of a .brd file or .sch file open at the same time?

thanks

Not sure if its the same in Windows as OSX, but in Windows, to open multiple instances, you need to have a separate session of Control Panel open for each .brd/,sch set.  You can't have more than one design open in a single Eagle session. Just open your first session and load your first file, then open another Eagle session for the next file and so on.  Hope that makes sense and is relevant to your OS.

I do this all the time on linux.  I start a second instance of ealge,

sometimes specifying the project file eagle.epf.  As a matter of fact, I

have associated eagle with the .epf file extension specifically for this

    purpose.

Newer versions of eagle now use the window manager's paste buffer,

making it possible to copy a group from one schematic running in one

instance of eagle to another running in a different instance of eagle.

Since OSX is pretty close to unix and linux, you should be able to run

eagle directly from a shell, each time pushing it to the background.

I Haven't figured out how to get eagle to have a second instance. no matter whether I click on the Eagle App icon, or click on a different eagle project file, it opens the same one. What did you mean by 'shell'?

Yes, OS X includes a lot of FreeBSD, a modern version of the Berkeley Software Distribution of Unix.  (The main reason I like OS X...)

In Mac terms, you can think of "shell" as being a "Terminal".  You can find Terminal in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

To get multiple copies of EAGLE running, open up a Terminal, and then use the "cd" command to go to something like /Applications/Eagle-5.12.0/EAGLE5.app/Contents/MacOS (modify for your particular installation) and type "./EAGLE &".  Then repeat the "./EAGLE &" for a second copy of EAGLE...

Oops, sorry, I was in Linux mode.  I forgot that OS X has an even easier way of getting a second copy of an application.  Just type "open -n -a EAGLE" in a Terminal window, no need to use cd...
