What is the best way to create variants of a board with the same layout?

I would like to create several BOM variations of a board.  The board layout (part locations, reference designators, and silkscreen) wouldn't change.

 

I looked at assembly variants but ideally I would change attributes instead of values.

 

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good way to do this?

 

The only other thing I can think of is to create a base schematic and board and then have a standalone schematic for each of the variants.

    Hi,

     

    I think that this is a real limitation of assembly variant. Assembly variant is great for mounted/unmounted parts, or values only variations.

     

    Until now, I mostly have mounted/unmounted variations, so assembly variant fit well.

    But twice I had to change more than the value (attributes needs to change too).  For this two special case, I add 2 components, one for each schematic variation and only one was mounted (depending on the assembly variant).

     

    The trouble with this technique, is that you will have to place and route 2 parts instead of one :

      - need more space,

    - or you put the two package exactly at the same position, but you will have errors.

     

    On the other hand, it help thins the mounting process, specially with automatic placement, because you will have 2 different names (you will no end up with a 'R3' part that will represent 2 different resistors,depending on the assembly variant);
