I see that Element14 is testing direct access to EagleCentral. The only
reason I can see for that is that Element 14 intend to close down the
Cadsoft news reader service.
Can any one from Cadsoft confirm that?
Regards
Warren

Hi Warren,
I'm not aware of anything of that nature going on. With that said, maybe
they've decided that it's best to mirror to an HTTP site then to the
newsgroup directly. In any case we've all mentioned that EAGLE Central's
interface to NNTP is superior so maybe they are trying to leverage that.
At this point you know as much as I do.
Best Regards,
Jorge Garcia

So let me get this straight: Element 14, powered and funded by a
multi-national corporation with a whole IT department at its disposal can't
figure out how to mirror NNTP groups. So they decide instead to scrape the
messages from EAGLE Central. EAGLE Central itself is run by one person
(me), part time, with not a lot of IT expertise and it has run reliably for
many, many years. That is really ironic.
If this is what Element 14 is doing then it's the wrong way about it. They
should be dealing with the official NNTP forum just like I'm doing at EAGLE
Central. Doing anything else is just asking for problems.
To be clear about this, EAGLE Central is mirroring the NNTP forums because
the NNTP forums ARE the official forums. We felt, in 2009, that perhaps
there was a more universal way to interact with the support forums and
added the web interface. We obtained permission from CadSoft directly and
intentionally mirrored the NNTP forums so the community would be kept
together (unlike other attempts of Yahoo groups etc).
I like that people thing we do such a good job that we must be the official
forums, but that isn't true.
James.
