Change to v8 Standard Li cense

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 8 years ago

For those who haven't seen on Autodesk's site, Matt has announced a change

to the new Standard subscription.

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/eagle-forum/a-path-forward-for-the-make-license-a-step-up-for-standard/td-p/6823182

Summarized:

now 4 layers instead of 2 only requires internet connection during

installation/upgrading

He somehow makes the argument that a subscription model makes this change

seamless as an update will happen in the next 2 weeks.  That is a

ridiculous argument as this change is tied to the binary and a new release

of the binary is all that is required.  EAGLE v7 had automatic prompts to

install new versions and this exact type of change happened between v7.0

and v7.1.

This is meant to give the EAGLE Make (formerly Hobbyist) license a path

forward.  This license is a commercial license so it doesn't have the

non-profit limitation that EAGLE Make had but is now limited to 4-layers vs

6-layers of EAGLE Make.

Maybe not perfect and there will be some for whom this isn't enough.  But

it's a step in the right direction.

Cheers,

James.

Thank you for this information, I had not seen it. That's really good news. It still doesn't help all hobbyists but it goes a big way toward recognizing their needs. I'd still like to see 6-layer hobbyist…

I'd still like to see 6-layer hobbyist version though, i.e. identical to what the Make version offered. 6-layers is affordable

for hobbyists nowadays, and more and more will need this (I need it right now). Although they could temporarily subscribe

to the professional version, the pro version is not really a fair price for hobbyist use, more suited for commercial use.

I think better to eliminate the worry from people thinking they may not be suited for EAGLE use tomorrow if they

need to move to 6-layer, by pre-empting it today with a hobbyist version that leap-frogs other paid CAD packages which

still have crazy multi-parameter licensing schemes like layers and pads and size.. Nothing is more off-putting than that,

and those manufacturers still do not understand this.
