Convert Eagle .brd To 3D Model With New OS X Copper Application

Check out the cool application on App Store for OS X for creating Eagle 3D Models.

 

I and a few others have pointed out some flaws with the software. The stuff I noticed (couldn't place 3D Through Hole Resistor) Is now fixed.

  • Interesting seeing developers creating an engineering application solely for Mac - and an OS that can't be used without hardware that most people don't use. They have shut themselves to more than 90% of potential users. That would be my feedback!

    I've tried and subsequently purchased Copper after seeing this thread.

    Thanks for posting this Josh, really useful.

     

    Yes being Apple only does limit the market somewhat but if you read the

    reason this came about, the author wrote it to overcome issues he had in

    his work flow. I guess he had a Mac and so therefore wrote it as a Mac app

    initially. I don't know what framework he used but if it's something

    portable like Qt then there is always a chance he may port it to Windows

    and Linux at some point in the future.

     

    I've actually had some communication with the Author of this app as I

    initially had some issues with a couple of my larger boards. The issues

    were identified and test versions sent to me within hours of me reporting

    the problem and a new tidied up release was made available to me in a

    couple of days. This is really excellent service in my opinion.

     

    There are some limitations currently. 3D models are limited to the ones

    currently available in the Copper library but according to the developers

    blog he's working on a new version which allows STEP files to be imported

    so any device will be easy to model so long as the manufacturer provides

    the right files.

     

    When you consider the cost of this app, and all the features it offers,

    it's a real gem and for me at least it was well worth the investment.

    The mac for creative and technical professionals is growing in popularity.  Almost all software and HW engineers in silicon valley are using mac's by default.  Saying the software for 3d rendering thats the default offering from cadsoft seems so expensive this looks like a real snap. 

     

    On a parallel track, I was initially amazed that othermachine.co who produce the othermill which has pretty tight integration with eagle initially only released on the mac....they are doing a roaring trade so it hasnt hurt them by going to the mac first.
