I suggest adding a logical pin number (in addition to the pin name text
that already exists) to all library pin symbols. This logical symbol pin
number should also show and allow editing in the symbol editor along
with the pin name text. This way, when you go to connect pins to the
package in the device editor, you can then have a "Auto-Connect" button
that simply connects all pins in the symbol to the package automatically
by number.
I've seen this scheme used in other PCB layout packages (DIPTrace) and
it would make creating devices MUCH EASIER and helps avoid common pin
numbering errors. Having to map names/numbers to pads and pins
one-by-one is very tedious on large parts and increases the chance of
the user making a mistake.
