Place Text / Change Text Defaults inside Eagle PCB

This seems like a really dumb question and before I start, THANK YOU again

for all those who helped me with Library Editing.....

I'm in PCB layout, placing text.

(Just an example): Say I want to place a bunch of text on Layer, 48

Documentation, Size 0.075 Proportional, not Mirrored.

I click on TEXT Icon (T), the 'Enter Text' window pops up, with default

layer 16, Mirror, Size and Font are O.K., I enter the word I want in the

window, I try and change Layer 16 Bottom to Layer 48 Documentation, or any

of the other parameters and all I get is a 'Ding'.

The only way I can edit the Text is to actually place it on the default

wrong layer, wrong Mirror, size etc and THEN Right Click, Properties, and

THEN I can change from the previous defaults.

What's the point of putting the text parameters up there when you hit the

text icon, if you can't change them????

I know the answer is going to be something really simple, - I just can't

seem to figure this out!

Set layer 48 current before you select the text command.

O.K. I open up my partially completed project.

I click on the layer icon.

    I select none, Apply

I scroll down to layer 48 and select it.

I select Apply, my layer 48 text shows up on my display.

    I exit by selecting OK

(I assume I have layer 48 current now?)

I select the text (T) icon

Layer switches to 16 Bottom (where did that come from)

and I'm in the same mess I was in before???

    This is user friendly?

James comment:.....(sometimes I have to check because I do it so much I

    don't pay attention any more).

I think this is part of my problem - I've been working so long (I started

with OrCAD DOS) on other CAD programs & Windows, that I am having a hard

time 'untraining' my brain from working in automatic mode.  I don't really

know what my hand/mouse is doing most of the time either (until something

    doesn't work).

Doug's suggestion typing in command Layer 48 BEFORE selecting the Text icon

works, Your suggestion selecting the layer AFTER inputting my text into the

window and while my new text is attached to the cursor works as well and

change Layer 48 works as well.

You just CAN'T input your text and attempt to right click, or change

    anything BEFORE you hit OK.

Tks Doug and James - I'll get it eventually.

Umm.... the way I find works is:

    - hit the text tool button

    - type in the text you want

    - with the text attached to the cursor, select layer 48

    - drop the text

    Tks Rob (& Doug etc)

I got it now, in fact I am feeling like I am STARTING to get really

    dangerous with Eagle!

The problem as I see it, is as soon as you select (T) icon, and before you

'enter text' the menu's open up at the top (layer, angle, size, ratio,

font, etc BUT YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHANGE ANYTHING (so what's the point

of having them open up?).  They should either open up AFTER you enter your

text and hit OK, or the program should allow you to edit them when they

first open up and before you hit OK (which is what I would prefer).

Having said all this, I now understand how to enter text and modify the

parameters.  You either do it BEFORE you hit the (T) icon ('Layer 48'

command for example) or you do it AFTER you hit O.K. which is what you

    suggested.

(Your suggestion probably should have said)

Umm.... the way I find works is:

    - hit the text tool button

    - type in the text you want

    - SELECT THE OK BUTTON

(which was my problem, I was trying to change it before I hit OK)

    - with the text attached to the cursor, select layer 48

    - drop the text

Remember, us newbies have to have EACH STEP spelled out - you old guys just

    do it automatically.

    tks again for your comments

    Mike
