EVENT based ULP run.

HI,

 

From what I know so far we can run a ULP based on the following "Events"

 

1) Directly from the COMMAND LINE

2) From the CONTROL PANEL

3) From a KEYBOARD Short cut

4) From a menu button ( Button texts)

5) From within a ULP (??)

 

there maybe other ways I am not sure of.

 

I would like to run certain ULP's from other EVENTS, such as

 

1) Before or after a TOOLBAR action

2) After or before any MENU Commands

 

I am thinking that if we had an option in the user preferences that would

list the event type and the ULP to run from that event, then it would be

easy to use.

 

I know this could stuff some things up, but Cadsoft could nominate what

events are available to choose from.

 

This would give us much more functionality that we can customise ourselves,

and not "Bloat" the software for others.

 

What do you think?

    would run upon the opening of a schematic or board. The ULP would be

    specific to the design file so reference to the ULP  would need to be

    contained in that file or the whole ULP contained in the .sch/.brd file when

    saved.

    Have you tried calling a ULP at opening of the brd/sch in eagle.scr ?

    A "top level" ULP could call a project level ULP knowing path, board name,

    etc

    I had rejected that approach earlier

    (1) A project can have more than one schem/board pair so it may not be

    appropriate to run the ULP for every board in the project.

    (2) Wish to keep ULPs out of the project folder.

     

    A similar idea is to run a "top level" ULP in eagle.scr that looks for a

    marker in the schematic/board.

    (Method 1) The marker is a device that would have an attribute and its value

    is the ULP to run.

    (Method 2) Look for the presence of an expressly named user defined layer in

    which you have placed text of the ulp to run.

    (Method 3) Place a unique text string in the Doc layer

    (Method 4)....................I'm still looking for the ideal place to put

    the marker .

     

    All methods have issues that need consideration. It would be simpler  if the

    sch/brd file could have the ULP imbedded. Failing full imbedding, storing

    the name of a ULP to run , upon loading the file, could access the

    ULP if available and report if it is not found. Removal of the need for the

    top level ULP is the goal.
