How to panelize and add rails??

e14 Contributor

I have searched and found a few examples of running the panel.ulp

so that I can copy and paste an entire layout.

However this does not cover a lot of other questions and needs for

panellizing.

Is there a tutorial or official instructions that explain how to do all of

the following steps (officially by Eagle):

1. Take a single PCB layout and repeat it (e.g. 1 pcb becomes 1x10

repeats)

2. Add rails on either side of the panel with fiducials (e.g. 10mm rails)

3. Choose either tab routing or v-scoring

I cannot get the array_board_v52 to work.  The preliminary step in the text file do not work.  I am using the latest professional version.  I have tried changing the paths.  When I run the script I just get a bunch of Layer not Found errors.

I have pro Eagle license with only Board option. Can I manage to panelize without consideration of those Schematic file steps?

    have a look at "array_board_v5.zip" @

    ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/userfiles/ulp/array_board_v52.zip

May be it can help you

    Thanks for the details.

This will get me to the point of a single pcb with multiple designs.

However, how do I define the rails and v-score/tab routing?

I would have one overal rectangle for the panel on the dimension layer.

Then I need to define how each of the smaller pcbs within the panel get

    seperated.

    Hi Danjel,

This you will have to discuss with the board house. Some board house

will simply ask you to draw the score/tab lines as a seperate layer,

then they'll follow that info to score or tab route the panel.

The same will happen with the rails, you'll have to discuss how your

    board house wants that indicated.

    hth,

    Jorge

I tried to install GerbMerge but it is an absolute nightmare to do on a Mac

and I got too frustrated. There must be an easier way!!

I have the standard version of Eagle and I am about to buy the pro version

but ONLY if it can allow me to do proper panels.

    Hi Danjel,

Check out this procedure for panelization:

    1. Open your first schematic

    2. Make sure to turn all of your layers on.

    3. Use the group command and select the entire contents of your schematic

    4. Use the Cut command and cut the group.

    5. EAGLE only allows one schematic to be open at a time, this is not a

problem because EAGLE maintains a buffer. Now your going to close your

schematic and open a new empty one which will be referred to in the rest

of this explanation as the master schematic.

    6. Use the paste command and you will now see your first design hanging

on your mouse cursor for you to paste on the drawing area.

7.Save your schematic and close it, give it a name to distinguish it

    from your original designs.

8.Open your first board file(Should be the file associated with the

    schematic we copied earlier)

9.Make sure to turn all of your layers on.

    10. If you need the reference designators to stay exactly the same as in

the original designs run panelize.ulp, if you don't mind the reference

designators changing as you paste boards then you can ignore this. The

panelize.ulp takes your reference designators and copies them as plain

text onto some user defined layers, the plain text format allows you to

maintatin your original designators. When you decide you're going to

produce boards then you can simply select the user layers as part of

    your silkscreen.

    11. Use the group command to select the entire contents of your board

file, then use the Cut command to cut the group.

    12. Now close you board file and open a new empty board file which will

be referred to as the master board file.

13.Click on the paste command and you'll see your original design

floating on your cursor waiting to be placed.

    14. Once placed, save your master board file giving it the same name as

the master schematic that way EAGLE will try to link the two.

    15. Open the master schematic. You should now have both the master

schematic and the master board file open.

    16. There may be an error that says board and schematic are not

consistent this is ok, and we'll be fixing it by running the ERC. The

ERC will popup all of the consistency errors that need to be corrected.

Make sure to correct these until you have a consistent board and schematic.

    17. From this point on it's just repetition, for as many designs as you

need to consolidate. Make sure you always copy designs into your masters.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia
