No. Not at all. In our institute, we have only a handful of people who
really KNOW the EAGLE software, and about 30 physics students who NEVER,
EVER did electronics in their wholes lives. Those are QUITE new users.
Of course, they use the mouse at first, as being the obvious and
intuitive thing to do.
But ONLY until I show them how they can speed up their schematics
creation by AT LEAST a factor of 10 (yes, ten!) by using the command
line. This lightning-fast approach unfortunately does NOT work with the
standard EAGLE libraries, but only with the ones I created myself. For
standard EAGLE, the factor is perhaps only 2. For the board, the
speed-up is also roughly 2.
Therefore, NOBODY scares off new users by pointing out that the command
line is useful: Everybody can use the mouse, the menus, key combinations
and whatnots as usual, and the command line is just something that
ADDITIONALLY can save lots of time.
And as for key combinations: By some curious coincidence, THOSE are the
ones our students don't use (I myself like them tremendously), though
they are quite easy to remember (always the first character of the
command). They either use the mouse or, for actions where the speed-up
is great, they use the command line.
The command line of course is cryptic at best if you do not want to use
the mouse AT ALL, but that would be ridiculous anyway. Therefore, being
able to use key combinations, mouse AND the command line how YOU think
it best is absolutely wonderful, and EAGLE is the only tool I know that
can do this.
- The mouse is wonderful (everybody uses it).
- Key combinations are wonderful (I use them, but nobody else in
our institute does).
- The command line is wonderful (all experienced and several other
people use it here).
Isn't the world sometimes just absolutely wonderful and not in the least
scary?
