Create PCB part library

Former Member

Hello,

Hope i post this on the right place, i'm new to this forum.

I'm using eagle for a while now and i like the way of working and the many options in the program.

Something that would be very usefull to me (and others i guess) would be the posibility to create a library part from a board.

With this option you can build your own blocks that are specific for an operation.

In this way users can save many time, dont have to design/route things twice.

Maybe it would be better to create a new library for this option.

Users could create parts like a +5VDC  supply (included layout & standard parts) or whatever you use often.

I´ve already done this by cutting from a board and pasting into a package.

The problem is here that the pad & holes cannot be added.

Another problem are the endless drc errors created by this method.

An exclude from drc check would solve the problem too and be in lot of situations usefull i guess.

Hope the idea is clear.

Greetings,

Bram

What your referring to is the idea of hierarchy, being able to treat

parts of a design or a single design as a block which can then be

    incorporated into other designs.

With the release of V6 we will be taking the first steps in this

direction with the Paste From feature. What this allows you to do is to

import an existing board/schematic into your design as a unit

maintaining consistency. So in your example if you already have a +5VDC

supply designed all you have to do is use the Paste From feature to

    bring it into your design.

Now it's not quite perfect because you can't define ports and the design

and really black box it. It's more like a Cut-Paste without the DRC errors.

Now that we have an XML file structure, future releases of V6 should

improve the feature till a hierarchical workflow is fully supported.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Guess i have to wait a bit longer.

Just checked out the beta version.

Think the XML structure breaks the projects open and makes it accesable to all kinds of software.

This could be enough allready to do such jobs.

    Grtz,

    Bram
