Eagle v6.2.0 Crashes using ULP or Design Rules?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hi All,

I am experiencing application crashes with v6.2.0 of Eagle running under Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.0. Whenever I try to use the ULP function or load a Design Rules file - The File List window appears momentarily, then closes and Eagle crashes.

I have tried removing the Eagle folder/Application. Reinstalling v6.2.0 and v6.1.0 but both have the same issue.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

Many thank, in advance.

Jeremy

    Hi Jeremy,

I can't reproduce the issue here in version 10.7.4 of the MAC OS what I

have been recommending to users is to check the ownership of there EAGLE

files on the MAC. This has helped reduce or eliminate some of the issues

    our mac users are experiencing.

    Here's the procedure.

    1. Open a terminal session.

    2. Find out where EAGLE's installation directory is located, by default

it should be in the applications folder.

    3. Use the cd (change directory) command to work your way to the EAGLE

    installation folder.

    4. Once your inside EAGLE's installation folder use the ls(list) command

to see the contents of EAGLE's installation directory. You should see

six folders bin, ulp, scr, lbr, doc, and cam.

    5. Use the ls -l command to give you a more info on the items. The item

you're interested is the ownership of the file, you'll notice that for

EAGLE's folders the owner is 507 instead of your user id.

    6. What you need to do now is change the ownership of the files to your

person. We do this using the chown(change owner) command. The syntax is

    as follows:

    sudo chown username file1 file2 file3 etc

Since we want to change the ownership of all of the files in the

directory it's easier to use a wildcard instead of the typing in the

folder names one by one. So the syntax you'll want to use is:

    sudo chown username *

    7. Now you have to cd into each individual folder and repeat step six

that way you have ownership of all of EAGLE's files and you can modify

    them as you wish.

    8. Once this is done you'll have access to all of EAGLE's files with the

exception of one, which is EAGLE hidden eaglerc file. This one is a bit

of a pain. Use cd .. to back track all the way to your home directory.

    9. Once here type ls -la this will show you the information pertaining

to all the files in the directory including the hidden ones. Make sure

that you see eaglerc among them. If you do repeat step 6 and you'll be done.

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I had changed the ownership of the /EAGLE-6.2.0 directory and all files/directories under it, using:

              chown -Rf {my username}:admin /Applications/EAGLE-6.2.0/

The -Rf option instructs "chown" to recursively move down through any subdirectories and force the application of the settings supplied. I have checked the file ownership details and the .eaglerc file too, to ensure they are as expected ({my username}:admin). The application, however, still crashes anytime I try to do the following in any project/.sch/.brd file:

         - load a ulp file

         - use a new .lbr file

         - load a Design Rules file

Thanks again for the information, but alas it has not fixed the issue..... image.

    Cheers

    Jeremy

    Hi Jeremy,

I'm digging here, is there anything unique or otherwise special about

your setup. If you have another MAC available would you be able to test

it out there and see if you get the same issues?

I can't reproduce the errors you're getting here.

Let me know what you find out.

FYI, there are no permission/ownership problems on my machine either and

Eagle still crashes. Not in the same way as Jeremy though; no trouble

using ULP's, etc....just random crashes most often when trying to exit

    the program.

    Andrew.

I hear you grasping at straws right now.  Maybe this will help.

If it's crashing, you should be able to get a core dump and send it to

    them.  From a shell, try:

        ulimit -c unlimited

        /path/to/eagle/bin/eagle

After a crash, you'll find a "core" file, or perhaps a "core.nnn" where

nnn is the pid that crashed.  gzip or zip it and send it to them.  since

the core file may be rather large, it's probably best to send it via

email rather than through this news group.

    Enjoy,

        - Chuck

I sent the Mac crash report (which included stack trace, register info,

    Hi,

your case gives us a chance to narrow the problem.

It would be great if you could give us some more details.

what exactly are you doing ? Press the ULP button or load it into our text editor ?

If the first: Does the same thing happen if you start a ULP from command line ?

          - use a new .lbr file

Same question: From command line ? From Control Panel ?

          - load a Design Rules file

From Control Panel ? Does it happen if you open it from the Design Rules dialog in an open board ?

    Andrew.

we got similar crash reports like that several times but could not deduce anything special.

The call stacks are in no relation to the activities reported by the customers.

We hope that Jeremy's case can help reproduce it for us.

I have also been seeing Eagle 6.2 crashing on the MAC.  Started after the upgrade to OSX 10.8.1.  From what I can tell, most of the crashes are during times when Eagle opens a file dialog.  I have to indirectly open boards and schematics instead of using OPEN in the file dialog.  I can get most things done but I need to run cam2print and it crashes everytime where it seems to open a file dialog and then everything goes aways.  I've change permissions as suggested.

    Help,

    Todd
