Ground plane Impedance, Mounting holes using Eagle

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hi,

I am new to Eagle and PCB design. Hope someone can help me with the following scans,

1. Is it possible to design a ground plane with a specific impedance using Eagle?

2. I need to make some mounting holes in eagle which will have connections to ground planes. In other words, a screw put inside the PCB can act as ground or connected to the ground plane?

3. If I have a Gerber file, is there any automated procedure to import a Gerber file into a PCB layout file in Eagle ?

Thanks in advance,

    Hello Khalid,

    I am new to Eagle

    welcome!

    and PCB design.

You might consider to first have a deeper look at this technology and

the related methods, before doing some real work.

    1. Is it possible to design a ground plane with a specific impedance

    using Eagle?

Can you explain what exactly you mean? A ground plane is a ground plane

    - it has no "specific impedance".

    2. I need to make some mounting holes in eagle which will have

connections to ground planes. In other words, a screw put inside the

PCB can act as ground or connected to the ground plane?

Simply use VIAs for these mounting holes (connected to the particular

signal, say GND). Select proper drill and diameter sizes. It is common

practice to place several additional small VIAs in the restring of this

"mounting vias" - resulting DRC complaints must be ignored or acknowledged.

    3. If I have a Gerber file, is there any automated procedure to

import a Gerber file into a PCB layout file in Eagle ?

Have a look at the "EAGLE Power Tools" by Falk Stricker, they are

available in the download section on the CadSoft website. Included is a

useful converter from gerber files to EAGLE script files. However, take

care that this imports just the bare copper - if you want an editable

design, you better redraw it completely within EAGLE. (This applies to

all CAD software, since the gerber files contain only a small part of

    the design data.)

    Tilmann
