    Hi Ellen,

The drill hole is always round (because the tool is a drill bit), but I guess you want to have a slot type shape, right? This can be done by drawing in a different layer a slot, and then telling the board manufacturer that you want a slot cut with a certain width with that layer gerber file, because then they replace the drill tool with a milling tool of the diameter to match the width that you asked for.

If it is a 1-off board, you could just to create a larger drill hole, and accept that it will not be optimum. I do this for DC power connectors

which tend to need a slot.

You can pick any unused layer (it doesn't matter) since it's your job to tell thePCB manufacturer which one you have chosen and the meaning of it.

You can draw with just the normal wire as long as you tell the manufacturer what it means. The file is just a representation.

What component are you drawing, that has close wide slots that you cannot use a drill hole?

Component manufacturers don't often have the requirement for slots, because they know that drill holes are easier.
