Eagle graphical glitch with fglrx drivers on Linux

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hello i am having an issue with eagle on Ubuntu 12.10 using a AMD HD 7770 graphics card using the fglrx drivers, currently im using the latest drivers (13.3) from their website but i have also tried older versions which come with ubuntu no difference.

I have also tried multiple versions of eagle, all have the same problem.

anything within the work area on either schematic or boardlayout will glitch up, i found another post in german with the same problem so its not just me having the issue. http://www.element14.com/community/message/73170

previously i had been using a nvidia card which worked fine on this system.

any help would be welcome, thank you.

    Hey all,

I've noticed that this problem isn't just restricted to Eagle. Most graphics programs (including unity) have issues with the ATI card. It appears that configured settings are not applied correctly upon reboot.

To get Eagle functioning properly, I've found that playing around with a combination of Tear-Free and other refresh settings, applying each time, and then zooming/scrolling a schematic after re-launching Eagle can eventually result in it being useable. If I come accross a successful set of repeatable operations I'll provide more information.

As this effects several work computers I think the easiest and cheapest solution is going to be to put a Nvidia card in them.

FYI, Eagle runs fine on the Radeon HD6450 (ATI 'Caicos' card) in my Gentoo

system using the open-source radeon driver. If you have a card supported by

the open drivers and don't do high-framerate gaming that's another option.

IMO the binary fglrx drivers are hopeless. I've also had good luck with

Nvidia and their binary blob in the past. In my experience any combination

other than ATI/OpenSource or NVidia/BinaryBlob is iffy at best.

I've used NVidia/nouveau with reasonable success.

Can You give examples of such programs (preferably open source)?

I wrote quite a few OpenGL programs, bugs of this type are triggered by very specific set of parameters

(certain filering method, texture format etc.). Maybe it will be possible to find some code that triggers similar behavior in  other program and post it here so devs can work around the driver bug (or fix real bug in their code, I don't know which one is the case here).

    edit:

I cannot use open source driver for radeon cards, I need Opengl 4.x support and AMD APP SDK which is usable only with hopeless fglrx image

Hi I use the latest fglrx driver and I have the same problems. A solution to this is to use a ssh connection to your server. ssh -X 127.0.0.1 and start eagle. It is a little bit slow but it works if you dont want to use the open source driver.
