Eagle graphical glitch with fglrx drivers on Linux

Former Member

Hello i am having an issue with eagle on Ubuntu 12.10 using a AMD HD 7770 graphics card using the fglrx drivers, currently im using the latest drivers (13.3) from their website but i have also tried older versions which come with ubuntu no difference.

I have also tried multiple versions of eagle, all have the same problem.

anything within the work area on either schematic or boardlayout will glitch up, i found another post in german with the same problem so its not just me having the issue. http://www.element14.com/community/message/73170

previously i had been using a nvidia card which worked fine on this system.

any help would be welcome, thank you.

A solution that I found I discovered when I ran across a similar issue with

    SublimeText under ubuntu.

The solution for me was to use this:

    sudo aticonfig --ovt=opengl

You'll likely need to restart afterwards to restart X. This has fixed all

artifacts and scrolling/zooming issues. Setting the tear-free option in the

Catalyst Control Panel is a good idea too.

To undo this if it does not work for you is

    sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

If this screws up bad you can reset all your ATI stuff back to defaults.

    sudo aticonfig --initial

Can't explain why it works but it did for me. I run XBMC from same machine

and everything i use seems to run fine. I am using a AMD Radeon 7770 card

and am on Mint Linux 15 (13.04). Eagle 6.50

    $ uname -a

    Linux DECAFE 3.11.2-031102-generic #201309262136 SMP Fri Sep 27 01:37:33

    UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

You can manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the line in this file

    to

Option      "OpenGLOverlay" "on" but it seems best to use the aticonfig

    command.

    Original solutions was from 'serialhex'

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for reply,

Opengl overlay is the first working solution for me.

Running eagle through ssh helped a little, but glithes in display were still

present, and it started complaining about "SYNC" extension missing on display.

Anyone knows why this works, and what does OpenGLOverlay option do in xorg?

I can confirm both issue and solution. I'm stuck to an integrated HD6320 solution on my HP635 laptop. It's working fine otherwise. The issue only occurs when using the fglrx proprietary driver. Eagle's absolutely fine with the oss driver. However, i need to use fglrx for HW video decoding and some games.

Enabling the GLOverlay fixed the issue but appears to give mixed results otherwise.

Some applications appear to speed up a little while others slow down but the difference either way is not too significant imho.

Before you run into the same trouble i did, here are some hints:

Be sure to disable "Tearfree" prior to activating the GLOverlay setting if you enabled it beforehand.

On lower-end solutions like the HD6320, it may lead to sluggish performance right down to where it becomes so slow you can barely use your system. Disabling Tearfree in a running session blanked my screen completely which had to be fixed by killing the complete session via ssh. This may of course lead to loss of unsaved data.

After restarting the session, Tearfree was still disabled. Games still work and performance was even slightly improved. Also the intermittent crashes of vlc media i experienced have disappeared.
