How to connect a through hole pad to a bottom ground plane ?

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I am using a header that is a through hole part. The pads on the bottom side are part of the "Pad Layer". I'm using a ground plane is part of the "Bottom Layer".

I want to connect some, but not all of the header pads to the ground plane that surrounds it. I'd like to connect it to the ground plane like my SMD pads where the Ratsnest automatically creates a dashed line around the pad to connect it to the ground plane.

Any idea how I can do this ?

Hi Bob, I asked a similar question yesterday and got an the answer, so let me help you with that... just helping out, I'm new the 6.5.

You connect the pads to the plane by changing the pad name to the plane name... this puts them in the same NET. This should "connect" the pad on the bottom plane and isolate the pad on the top if it is not connected to a plane of the same NET (I'm not sure how to accomplish this if you want to top pad isolated fro the same NET without changing the top plane name to another NET)

The "dashed lines" you are descibing are turned on and off via the THERMAL check-box in the properties of the pad. The width of these lines is controlled by the Width property in the same dialog. You'll also want to mess around with the Isolate width as well on both the pads and plane.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply Chuck.

The pads don't allow me to select them individually. I'm using a Molex Header 1 type part. When I smash the part, then click INFO on the part the entire part and pads light up.

I can't seem to select a single pad to define it the my GND net...

Shouldn't you use the NAME command instead of INFO?

Ignore my last post.  I did some testing on one of my designs.  I could select some pads, but not all.  Interesting!  The ones I couldn't select were already assigned to GND or DGND.  I could select the pads that are attached to other nets though.  It's probably a layer thing that I haven't figured out yet.  At this point, my suggestion would be to switch to the schematic and see if you can change the names there.  I think that will work...

I'm a bit tired, and I just started on ACE inhibitors today, so I may be just blithering anyway.

    Good luck...  image

you need to connect the pins in the schematic

Thank you to all that helped me. The schematic pin connect did the trick.
