Can't search a schematic PDF with Eagle 7.1

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I have Eagle 7.1 professional

When I print a schematic in PDF, the PDF is not searchable. I am using the full version of Acrobat with the PDF printer driver.

I can create a searchable PDF schematic from Orcad, PADS and Altium but not from Eagle.

I have found that others have had this problem in the past. in 2012 Eagle admitted to having a problem with third party drivers.

This is 2014 and a new release 7.1 and Eagle still has not fixed this problem? Does anyone know anything about this?

I paid for a professional license I would like for it to act professional and provide quality results. How can I give this to a customer and explain that my CAD package won't create a searchable PDF?

I just tested it here.. I can search for a refdes in printed schematics, but

I can't search for it in printed board layout. 6.5.4 lets me search board

    too.

    Definitely something wrong there.

Hmm I think I have to take this back. Doing a 2nd test and it seems to work.

I wonder if the Adobe Reader did it wrong, or if it was a slip with the

    fingers..

    Hi Gordon,

I hope you're doing well. The key to obtaining a searchable PDF is to

make sure you're using proportional font. Like friedl mentioned make

sure that "Always Vector Font" and "persistent in this drawing" are

unchecked, other wise it will change the font.

    Thank you, this did work.

Why is the default for User Interface Vector font and Persistent in this drawing?

I was unable to find anything that explains this or recommends a setting change.

If a tree falls in the woods and there is no body around to hear it, does it make a sound?

If Eagle fixes a problem and they tell no one, is the problem fixed?

    Thanks for your help!

As far as I can say, not checking those settings could result in troubles

when generating CAM files. More precise text contained in the silkscreen

might not print correctly on your PCB, as I've experienced.

Why not add meta data to the pdf vector font, so it can be searched? Ive

seen even scanned documents searchable this way.

By default these are not checked, at least not in my installation.

Currently we have a bit of a compromise within EAGLE. On the layout we

would ideally want to only use the Vector font, since that is all that

Gerbers can contain and would be an accurate representation of what your

finished board would look like. The downside is that for now at least

Vector font doesn't yield searcheable PDFs. Only proportional font can

    currently generate a searcheable PDF.

The decision that was made was that everything would use proportional

font by default and then on the board you could switch to vector font

using those options in order to get an accurate view of what your board

    will really look like.
