As everything did not work you should something else.
You have not said which layer the text is on so that is the first thing to
establish.
Turn of the displayed layers one at a time until the text disappears. You
now know if the text is on a layer. Text should have a origin associated
with it and you delete the text at that point.
If you ran the DRC then clear the errors there as your text may be a mass
of errors replicating your original text, if that's possible.
If the text is in the library then you need to delete it at there in the
package editor

Before playing with various layer settings, I suggest click on the delete button and then the + sign which will be present on any one corner of the text block. It is very easy to miss the small plus sign. You can see it in the picture below. Also note that the plus may be on another corner(depending on how you placed the text originally)

Thank you Tarang Shah. Your suggestion worked perfectly. I put the version number onto the wrong layer (top) and was having a little trouble taking it back off. It's gone now.
