ODB++ data format is essential to broader acceptance of Eagle

thatswellguyandy
thatswellguyandy over 11 years ago

I have been a loyal user of Eagle for many years, and like the performance -- simplicity and stability.  What is needed to expand acceptance to bigger corporate usage is generation of ODB++  format data for PCB fabrication and use in programming placement machines.  Also what would be needed is the ability to import Orcad, Altium/Protel, PCAD, and PADS data formats and libraries.  This would make the use of Eagle a snap decision.  Aside from "dum-dums" who must do simulations, Eagle does everything you need and is simple to use.  I'm not saying LTSpice is bad of course -- works fine for most needs.  But the new improvements I'm proposing would go far in cementing the use of Eagle on a broader scale.

Just a thought here. I'm thinking that this ODB++ issue may not be as simple

    as it sounds.

The manufacturer may ask for ODB++ but when they ask, they initially believe

they will get a lot of the manufacture parameters "for free" from you,

parameters that Eagle does not (yet) support, like for example pcb material

types (and most likely a bunch of other information). They may be a bit

disappointed when all they get is a new format of the same old data?

It may be better to give them the old data and keep them concious about what

they need to do with it, but I'd like to get comments from people with real

manufacture experience on this. Maybe Cadsoft have been talking to them

    about the issue?

    Hi Guys,

I can't say much, because I don't have much solid info yet. However, I

know this is something we're seriously looking to implement in the short

    term.

I'll let you know what and if anything happens.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

It's been over a year since this ODB++ topic was last brought up for discussion.  Can you provide any update?

    Thanks.

    John

    Hi John,

As of the last roadmap I saw, this is forthcoming in the V7 series

sometime next year. That's all I know of it at the moment.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hello image

I do not know if you have already sorted out your problem, but you can try PCB-Investigator. PCB-Investigator has solved the ODB++/Eagle Topic, it is a CAD/CAM Software for investigating PCBs: https://pcb-investigator.com/en.

    Regards,

Well, I might, but the spamming of newsgroups and forums is a marketing

technique that seriously puts me off a product.
