Modules in part names in board layout

herrplanet
herrplanet over 10 years ago

Dear all,

with the introduction of the new modules we have been happily started to segregate our schematics into different modules, alas everything is fine. The designs included nested submodules with different depths. Now the module names are rather long for identification (Module_part_...) and not acronyms. The part names in the layout become unacceptably long,  since there is more than one layer using the offset is not an option. Is there yet any solution to this like module acronyms or an ULP which numbers all the parts on the board finally?

    Hi Alex,

This is coming in 7.2. You'll be able to assign prefixes to modules, so

for example a module named POWER can have a prefix like P. On the board

you'll see something like P1:R1 instead of POWER1:R1. You can test it

out in the latest beta 7.1.2.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Jorge,

    I am running Eagle 7.3.0 x64 on Windows 7.

I have set a prefix for each of my modules, but the full name of the module

    still appears on the board.

Eg. I expect to see "PSU:C1" but instead see "POWER-SUPPLY-MODULE:C1"

Do I need to take any extra steps to have the prefix applied on the board?

    Thanks!

    Jordan

    Hi Jordan,

I have it working over here. Remember that the module prefix needs to be

defined at the time in which you create the module. Is this what you did?

With a little more information I think we can figure this out.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

No, I did not set the prefix when I created the module. After finding this

thread, I went back and set the prefix by choosing "Properties" on the

    module.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

I've figured out a work around until this is fixed.

(I'll assume your module is named "POWER-SUPPLY", the instance you wish to

change is "POWER-SUPPLY1", and you've already set the prefix on the module

    itself to "P")

    In *.sch:

Find & replace all instances of "POWER-SUPPLY1" with "P1". Repeat for any

other instances. Don't try and replace "POWER-SUPPLY", it will break

    references to the module.

    In *.brd:

Find & replace all instances of "POWER-SUPPLY1" with "P1". Repeat for any

other instances. This may be able to be shortened to "POWER-SUPPLY" but

    this is untested.

I've needed to do this again, and looking back, all this does is change the

NAME of the module. This can be done in EAGLE without the need to edit

files, but it's kind of an annoying workaround.

Is there any estimated time frame for fixing this bug? Updating to 7.4.0

and changing the module's PREFIX doesn't have any effect.

    Cheers,

    Jordan
