Need for Tantalum Capacitors

I am looking at the Datasheet for a Micrel 5219-3.3BM5 Linear Voltage Regulator. The typical application shows the Vout pin connected to a 2.2uF tantalum capacitor. I do not know much about tantalum capacitors and I am wondering why this circuit would need to differentiate. Is the tantalum capacitor neccesary? What does it do that is different?

    Tantalum capacitors have a very low ESR and therefore act as a capacitor and bypass high frequency ripple and noise.

     

    You could use good quality Aluminum capacitors and achieve similar results if tantalum aren't available.
