Save part to NEW Library?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hello,

Hopefully, there is a nice easy way to do what I am requesting...

I have used various pparts from the existing EagleCad libraries... thru-hole resistors, diodes, caps, etc. They exist in Schematic and Board sides - everything works fine.

I have created a new Library Folder... and would like to simply select the part and save it to this new folder so, (a) my design references this new location, and (b) I have my own custom Library going forward (a collection of frequesnt used parts).

Something tell sme that this is no simple task in Eagle.... as my "save as" attempts do not seem to allow me to reference a Library...

Can someone point me in the right direction, maybe a LINK to a procedure?

When sharing designs with a client, would be easiest to send him a single custom Library...

Thank you,

Chuck

Chuck, what you want to do is either easy, or somewhat easy.

    • Open the destination library in the library editor.
    • In the Eagle Control panel, navigate to the source library, and then to the device that you want.
    • Right click that device, select Copy to Library. Eagle copies that device, with its symbol(s) and package(s) to the currently open library.

If instead you want to create a library out of the devices that you've used in a schematic, then you:

    • Open the schematic
    • File > Export > Libraries  (read the details in section 5.6 of the Eagle 7.3 manual, or similar) This is implemented by a ULP: exp-lbrs.ulp, so you can look at that to.

You can combine these two techniques of course to assemble the library you want. Perhaps a library per project, or one or more libraries of components that you frequently use across many projects, modified the way you like them.

    Other points:

You might be interested in the entirety of manual Chapter 8, especially section 8.17 Library and Part Management.

And as a general comment, if you don't already know, you need to be clear that a Device (aka Deviceset) is an object that associates to one or more Symbols and zero or more Packages. For different purposes you may be interested in copying etc entire Devices, or instead copying individual Symbols or Packages.

    Hope that helps,
