Don't Connect/Route Power Pin

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi everyone!

I'm making an Arduino Due Shield, and at the Main Board there are Output Power Pins (+5V, +3V3), which I use in my Shield.

The problem is that those pins are being connect one to each other (Output to Output) and not only to what is being used in my Shield (as Input).

Those Output Power Pins are in a simple Header.

Is there someway to tell the program to don't connect them?

Thanks!

    Hi Giovanni,

The 3V3 and the 5 volt power taps on the header of the Arduino should not be connected to one another. The power to these pins is not software controllable either. If they are connected, there may be a solder bridge somewhere you don't want it. I might ask, what makes you think that they are connected and where do you think this connection is being made? Here is the schematic for the Due:

    https://www.arduino.cc/en/uploads/Main/arduino-Due-schematic.pdf

The 3V3 is provided by using some power from the 5 volt source and regulating it with the IC 4 NCP1117ST.

    Hi Giovanni,

Assuming you are using EagleCad, I guess you have a schematic error to do

    with your supply symbols.

Attach your schematic. Forum members should be able to provide a specific

    answer then.

    Thanks for the replies!

I've attached my schematic and board, they are not complete, as I'm

    researching components to use.

I'm using Auto Router to route the existing wires, but the +3V3 Output

are being connect to each other +3V3 Output and also with the +5V

Output, what would be a waste.

Is there a way to tell the Auto Router to don't do this?

    Hi

It's unclear to me what you are asking but the following observations

    may help you.

In your schematic, the power connector pin2 is shown as a +3v3 net. I

suspect pin 2 should be connected to pin 5 (+5v)

You should add the supply symbols +3v3 and +5v to the schematic.

Beyond that I cannot help as you have not explained why you feel you

have an output to output connection. Are you sourcing +3v3 and +5v from

other than that rising off the arduino mega? If you are then they need

different names to keep the nets apart.

    HTH

I took a look at the Arduino Due schematics and board layout. In your

schematic, you have the power connector wired correctly: pins 2&4 are +3v3,

pin 5 is +5v, and pins 6&7 are ground.  So, +3v3 and +5v are not shorted

together on your board.  So, I don't see that you have anything to worry

about. On the board itself, you should fatten up the +3v3 and +5v traces to

at least 16 mil; 24 mil is better.

Thanks for the replies and tips!

My problem is with Auto Router. There are some headers which provide +5V and +3V3 to my shield, but those +5V are begin connected to each other, even when they are an Output, what wouldn't be necessary.

For example: There are the +5V in ICSP header and +5V in Power Header, they don't need to be connected to each other, as they are the same Output. This cause a wast in Auto Router as it routes the unecessary wire.

Is there a way to make it don't waste Auto-Routing those wires?

Really? You have two pins that you have explicitly placed ON THE SAME

NET in the schematic, thus telling Eagle that they need to be connected,

and you're complaining that it tries to connect them?

If they shouldn't be connected then they can't be the same signal and

you need to not have them connected on the schematic.

If they are the same signal and should be connected then you WANT the

    autorouter to connect them.

If the power header and ICSP header both have pins for the 5V supply,

and it's the same 5V supply, then both pins need to be connected to the

5V supply and thus to each other for the board to be correct.

If you don't like the particular route that the autorouter lays out then

do that routing by hand. Just don't blame the tool for doing what you

    tell it to.
