I switch between two computers a lot.

Would it be possible to run Eagle on both computers, with the license key somehow on a usb stick?

    Hi Joel,

You are allowed to install eagle on multiple machines using the same

license so long as you are the only user so no need to worry about trying

to share a USB license stick!

See here where this was answered by Jorge from CadSoft previously:

    Best Regards,

    Hello Rachael,

So I went and bought a license, but now when I'm on one mac and try to save what was started on another mac

    I get this error:

'/Users/BigDummy/Documents/eagle/WidgetShaker_v1.0/WidgetShaker_v1.0ar.sch' is locked on host ‘BigDummys-iMac.home' from owner ‘BigDummy’ at 24.01.2016 22:53.32.

And I am unable to save back to the same named file.

    thanks

    Joel

    Hello Joel,

That's File locking rearing it's head. If you don't work in a

collaborative environment  you can choose to delete the lock and then

    save your file.

Once you do go to Options > Backups/File Locking in the EAGLE control

panel and disable the File Locking feature.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Additionally,

This should be fixed in the beta release 7.5.1, could you try it out and

see if this error continues to pop up?

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Jorge,

What is the use case that the file lock feature is supposed to be helping?

Anywhere I have encountered that has multiple engineers working on the same

design (no matter what CAD tool) have external revision control tools

providing this feature.  The only place I can see the file locking feature

of EAGLE helping is if you had a small Engineering team that had the design

hosted on an external network (or cloud) drive and everyone opening the

files directly--that is a very bad idea for many reasons and enabling that

paradigm is setting up your customers for problems.

Maybe there is a use case that I haven't thought about that the current

implementation (if working) would help.  I would think a better approach

would have been to put the hooks in EAGLE to integrate with external

revision control tools (SVN, GIT, ...) to help the use case above in a

    collaborative environment.

    Cheers,

    James.

    Hi James,

I fully agree with you on integrating with established revision control

tools. That's definitely the way to go.

To be honest, I haven't inquired as to the use case of the file locking

feature. I know that there was a time when it was heavily requested but

I can't think of a use case that wouldn't be better served by a

    VCS(version control system).

The paradigm you mention in the first paragraph, though definitely

sub-optimal is also very common and may very well be what the devs had

    in mind.

I'll find out the thought process and post back.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia
