Autorouter improvements

jakej

Autorouter should allow for higher-level constraints, like keeping a net class on a specific layer, or preferring a layer, or minimizing distance of certain net classes, etc

Autorouter should try to use traces larger than the minimum set in the design rules, only going to minimum traces when it is actually necessary

Autorouter should not ignore ground connections

Eagle should allow the option to spread traces where there is room to do so.  If you set a 8mil spacing limit it will pack the traces together, even if there is 200 mils of routing space for 3 traces. Other routers can try balancing the spacings ("spreading"), once the routing is complete.

Manual method would do this fine.

Well, so would just using masking tape and a drafting table.  I'd hope to not reposition lots of autorouting manually.  There may be vias needing to be moved and a lot of traces being shoved around or even rerouted slightly to take advantage of open space.  If you pay for an autorouter, it should be able to quickly do this task (in fact one router I had, did indeed have this shove/reroute/clean up process).   Of course there will be some manual cleanup, but at least let the autorouter get it close.

This is another bothersome aspect of Eagle's router:

Autorouter should try to use traces larger than the minimum set in the design rules, only going to minimum traces when it is actually necessary. It seems to want the closest packed thinnest traces, when in some cases you want the opposite.  Why etch away good copper--you pay for it.
