Schematic Libraries vs. Layout Libraries

Hello,

 

I have been using EAGLE for only a short time now as an EE Student and have run into an interesting error. I have been unable to import a library for a particular part from the Newark website and decided to use a SO20W reference package. When I am in the Layout editor and search for parts, several SO20W packages come up however the software will not allow me to add it to the layout editor. Once I move over to the schematic editor and make the same part search, none of what showed up for the layout editor is visible. I am unable to figure out why? Please let me know as this is a long term school project that is on a deadline. Thank You

    Libraries contain symbols, packages and devices[aka part]. A device consists of a symbol and a package.

    A symbol is the logical representation, and a package is the physical representation. The combination makes a device or part.

    In the schematic editor, you can only add a device (i.e. part) but not just a symbol or a package.

    If you want to use a package, then in the library editor you need to actually create a device and add the package to it, and then add the device (part) as usual in the schematic editor.

    This is described in the user manual for EAGLE.
