Computing polygon area

RayA
RayA over 9 years ago

Is there a feature in EAGLE, or a ULP, that can compute the area of a polygon in a non-copper layer? (Also, same question for copper layer, if it makes a difference.)

I want to do this so that I can measure how much board area was used for certain sections of an existing design, and use that number to help estimate how much board area will be required for a new design.

Thanks,

Ray

    Hi Clem,

It is indeed a non-regular shape.

I create it by using straight line segments in the polygon command to draw a border close around the components and vias that make up a particular section of an existing board layout.

I have seen a formula in the past that would let you enter the coordinates of the polygon vertices and compute the area, but it would be nice if I could just get the area in a ULP report, similar to getting trace length from "Length.ULP". Or maybe if an "area" report could be added to the polygon section of "Statistics-BRD.ULP". That would be great.

My method now is simply to set the grid to a nice round number like 0.025", count the squares inside of my polygon, and do the math. Crude, but effective.

What about this Computing polygon area where I gave a formula.

That link just jumps back to this message string. You probably intended to link to this one: Area of a polygon algorithm - Math Open Reference.

That's the formula that I mentioned previously, that you had sent to me when I was trying to compute board area. I had forgotten about it because It didn't work for me then, because my boards usually have curved outlines, but it should work for the polygons that I'm dealing with now.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the coordinate date out of EAGLE in the correct format, and figure out how to run a Javascript.  Ha. I'll work on it.

But it would be easier if it was in a ULP. Maybe this is my chance to learn how to write one.

    Thanks, Clem.
