Clear attributes when changing part value

vitomarolda70

Hello,

when designing a new board modifying an older one, I am often scared e.g. to have changed a resistor value, while attributes already contain MF/MPN/OC_FARNELL for the older value.

I would really appreciate a WARNING when changing part value if some attributes are set, with the following message:

"WARNING: There are set attributes: Do you want to delete all attribute values? (Yes/No/Cancel)".

Yes: part value is updated, attribute values are deleted (attribute keys are retained)

No: part value is updated, attributes remain unchanged

Cancel: part value and attributes remain unchanged.

Does it seem a good idea?

Regards,

--Vito.

This and other warnings are good idea and may get implemented some day. But a backup plan for your data is the ultimate insurance! Then you can go back even when you have a oh s--- moment with software not working the way you think. Believe me I have had many of those.

Hello, the problem is not about losing data, but it is about producing the wrong bom with the wrong order codes for the wrong component.

Maybe I should reformulate the post?

    Hello,

I solved the problem for part without 'value' (such as semicondutor, connector etc...) : the attributes are defined in library, so if I change package or technology, attributes are changed and the bom will be OK.

But for parts with a 'value' this is more tricky. Maybe an other way would be to consider the 'value' like other attributes.

So for changing the value of a part, instead of opening the 'value' window, Eagle would open the attribute window, and of course the attribute window let us edit the 'value' like the other attributes. There will be 2 advantages :

    - 1 : when we change a value: all the attributes are displayed, so we can thing about other attributes, so less possibility to forget to change other attributes...

    - 2 : often when we change a value we also need to adjust other attributes. For example, when I change a resistor I often adjust the 'tolerance' attribute or the 'power'  one. When I adjust a capacitor, I need to adjust the rate voltage etc... Today I need to do thing in 2 steps, first I use the Value window, then I need the attribute one. If the value was consider as an attribute, we change the value and the other attributes all together in 1 single step !

    Guillaume.
